West Amwell Teaches 21st Century Skills
This year West Amwell teachers are paying particular attention to developing critical thinking and communication skills in the students. This effort is based on the ideas of Harvard education expert Tony Wagner and his book The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don’t Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need and What We Can Do About It (Basic Books, 2008). Wagner interviewed leaders in business, nonprofits, education, and the military to find out what qualities and skills they look for in employees. He observed hundreds of classrooms across the country and found that even the top schools are not teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy. Based on his research, Wagner identified seven “survival skills” that students need to master to thrive in the 21st century. Superintendent Dr. Todd A. Fay discussed The Global Achievement Gap.
