The West Amwell Township Elementary School District provides an exemplary education program to all of our students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Our highly effective school provides a warm, caring environment to support our children as we strive for academic excellence. Our teachers, parents, School Board, and administrators all serve as partners in our student’s learning. Although our enrollment continues to gradually increase, the relative small class size here allows us to provide each child with individual attention. Each child receives classroom based guidance lessons through the “Character Counts” program, designed around the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, caring, responsibility, fairness, and citizenship.
Some of the highlights delivered to our students include: a full day kindergarten program, a Spanish program in K-6 that stresses the four language skills, a full-time guidance counselor who delivers a curriculum to all students; a comprehensive fine arts program delivered by our music and art teachers, a preschool handicapped class for children ages 3-5 who demonstrate the need for specially designed instruction, and the innovative use of research based programs designed to improve student achievement.
The New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards serve as the basis for the West Amwell Curriculum that also incorporates national standards. Our curriculum is constantly evolving to reflect the needs of our learners. To that end, during the past year West Amwell has undertaken an effort to write curricula collaboratively with five other districts using a web-based tool called Power Curriculum. We work closely with South Hunterdon Regional High School in an effort to develop a K-12 curriculum in order to ensure that our students learn all that is required while they have a successful transition to the next level.
One of the strengths of our school is the extensive parental involvement. The West Amwell PTO serves as an active partner in enriching the overall experience that our students receive here at our school. Throughout the year the PTO sponsors various activities such as: assemblies, field trips, a back to school picnic, book fair, and field day. This fine organization provides numerous opportunities in which parents and community can become involved with our school.
West Amwell strongly believes in providing our students with the necessary skills in the use of technology. Our kindergarten through sixth grade program strives to integrate technology as a learning tool into all parts of the curriculum. This past school year we have added six Smartboards and an Applecart to further enhance our program. Our school is equipped with a fully integrated network with wireless capability.
