Legislative Ad Hoc Committee
Legislative Ad Hoc Committee Update:
In an effort to keep everyone informed regarding current
and impending legislation that impacts education in the state of New Jersey, we
will be sending you regular updates through e-mail or backpack mail, as you
requested. There will also be a direct link to this information through
our district web site. We will also try to provide information that will
clarify mandates, laws, regulations and testing that is required by the state,
as well as providing relative links to the Department of Education, your state
Legislators and New Jersey School Boards Association.
Assemblyman Michael Doherty –

Assemblywoman Marcia Karrow –

- There is a new program started by New Jersey School
Boards Association called NJSBA EAGLES (Education Advocates Grassroots
Lobbying Effort). Should you like more information and/or care to join
go to:
www.NJSBA.org and click on Soar Like and EAGLE. In the “position” area
put in parent.
- West Amwell Board of Education passed a Resolution at
our November meeting to restore the principal of majority rule in the state
of New Jersey as it pertains to special budget questions in School Board
annual elections. Assembly Bill A-1 imposed an unprecedented 60% majority
vote for special questions which could mean that budgets which already face
constraints imposed by legislation would be further hampered and programs
and facility maintenance would be impacted. We are looking for our
Legislators and Governor Corzine to amend Chapt. 62. The resolution asks
for the simple majority rule to be restored. For more information go to:
www.NJSBA.org and click on 60% Voter Approval. To voice your opinion
contact your Legislators and the Governor.
- The final approval for the Super County
Superintendents as created by Bill A-4, was pulled before a vote was taken
this month. The 21 Super County Superintendents were set to begin as of
January 1, 2008 with the mandate of designing plans to create only K-12
districts in each county within the next three years. These plans would be
subjected to voter approval. We will keep you updated on developments.
- There is tremendous pressure on the Governor and the
Legislature to come up with a much needed new school funding formula. For
more information you can go to
www.NJSBA.org and click on School Funding Formula and
www.state.nj.us/education.
